Swedish Massage

From Fencing to Healing: The Story Behind the Massage. You might be surprised to learn that the world's most popular massage technique was born out of sport and physiology. Swedish Massage was developed in the early 19th century by Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish fencing master and gymnastics instructor. Seeking to cure his own rheumatism and injuries sustained during fencing, Ling created a unique "Movement System" based on anatomy. His goal was simple yet revolutionary: to heal the body by improving circulation and muscle function. This method became the foundation of modern Western massage therapy.

How It Works: The 5 Essential Movements

Unlike a standard rub-down, a true Swedish Massage follows Ling’s systematic approach. During your session, we utilize five distinct strokes designed to improve oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles:

1. Effleurage (Gliding): Long, sweeping strokes directed towards the heart. We use this to warm up the muscle tissue, spread the oil, and calm the nervous system at the beginning of the treatment.

2. Pétrissage (Kneading): A deeper technique that involves kneading, rolling, and squeezing the muscles—similar to kneading dough. This is crucial for flushing out metabolic waste (like lactic acid) and releasing deep-seated tension.

3. Friction (Rubbing): Concentrated, circular pressure applied with fingers or thumbs. We use friction to target specific "knots" (adhesions) and scar tissue, restoring flexibility to the muscle fibers.

4. Tapotement (Rhythmic Percussion): Rapid, rhythmic tapping or cupping movements. This is used to invigorate the muscles and stimulate nerve endings, leaving you feeling re-energised rather than lethargic.

5. Vibration (Shaking): A rapid shaking movement applied to specific limbs or the back. This technique helps to loosen up the muscles and soothe the nerves, perfect for areas holding stubborn tension.

Experience the Original Therapy

By combining these five techniques, Swedish Massage does more than just relax you. It reduces cortisol (stress), boosts the immune system, and accelerates physical recovery. It is a time-honoured remedy for modern-day stress.

                       Aromatherapy

The modern foundations of aromatherapy are closely linked to the work of French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in the early 20th century. In 1910, while working in his laboratory, Gattefossé suffered a serious burn to his hand during an explosion. Acting instinctively, he immersed the injured hand into a container of pure lavender essential oil. To his surprise, the burn healed rapidly, with minimal scarring and no infection. This experience sparked his lifelong interest in the medicinal and therapeutic properties of essential oils and led him to coin the term aromatherapy in 1937. His research helped bridge traditional plant medicine with modern scientific understanding.

During an aromatherapy massage, essential oils are carefully blended and diluted in a carrier oil to suit each client’s physical and emotional needs. The massage techniques used are typically slow, flowing and deeply relaxing, drawing mainly from Swedish massage, lymphatic techniques and gentle neuromuscular work. Long, rhythmic strokes help calm the nervous system, while light to medium pressure encourages circulation and supports lymphatic flow. Gentle kneading and circular movements are used to ease muscular tension, while the inhalation of aromatic oils works directly on the limbic system — the part of the brain responsible for emotions, memory and stress response.

This combination of touch, rhythm and aroma creates a powerful mind–body experience, promoting relaxation, emotional balance and overall wellbeing.

MANUAL  LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Is a gentle and highly specialised treatment designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and support the body’s natural healing and detoxification processes. It is particularly beneficial following surgery, medical procedures or aesthetic treatments, as it can help reduce swelling, bruising and fluid retention, while supporting tissue repair and overall comfort during recovery.

The treatment uses slow, rhythmic and precise hand movements to encourage lymph flow and improve circulation without placing stress on the body. Unlike deep massage, MLD works on the superficial lymph vessels, making it exceptionally soothing and suitable when the body requires a light, careful approach. Clients often experience a sense of lightness, reduced tension and deep relaxation after treatment.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is widely used as part of post-operative care (with medical approval where required), after cosmetic procedures, and for anyone experiencing puffiness, heaviness or compromised lymphatic flow. It supports the immune system, calms the nervous system and helps restore balance to the body in a safe and nurturing way.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle yet powerful holistic therapy that works through specific pressure points on the feet or hands, each reflecting different areas of the body. By stimulating these points, reflexology encourages the body’s natural ability to restore balance, release tension and support overall wellbeing.

This therapy has its roots in ancient healing practices from Egypt, China and India, where touch was used to support balance and harmony within the body. Today, reflexology is a modern holistic treatment widely used to promote deep relaxation and wellbeing.

This deeply relaxing treatment helps calm the nervous system, improve circulation and promote a sense of harmony between body and mind. Often described as “deep relaxation from the feet upwards”, reflexology allows the whole body to unwind — quietly, naturally and at its own pace.

Couple massage

Couple Massage is a shared massage experience designed for two people, carried out at the same time in the same space by two therapists. It is not only about physical relaxation, but also about connection, presence and taking time out together in a calm, nurturing environment.

This treatment allows you to relax side by side while each person receives a massage tailored to their individual needs — whether that is deep relaxation, muscle tension relief or stress reduction. Sharing this experience often enhances emotional closeness, supports wellbeing and creates a sense of harmony between body and mind.

Couple Massage is perfect for partners, close friends, family members or anyone wishing to enjoy a meaningful, restorative experience together. It is also a popular choice for special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays or simply as a way to slow down and reconnect.

The treatment can be provided in our salon or in the comfort of your own home, with a professional mobile service bringing relaxation directly to you.
